My family has always wanted what’s best for me, whether it’s achieving my goals in school or sports. Because of that I have always pushed myself to do the best I can. A famous chinese proverb that I have chosen to live by is, “Failure is not falling down but refusing to get up”, because I believe that wherever you end up in life is all on you. Life gives you obstacles so it is your job to work hard and overcome them.
During my childhood I didn’t really get to spend that much time with my mom because she was always working in order to provide for my sisters and I. When I was younger I never had that male role model figure in my life because my dad was never around. However, my mom helped me deal with situations in which I needed someone to look up to. When my mom was working I had to rely on my older sisters to watch over me and raise me to be the person I am today. I also try hard to achieve my goals not just for myself, but to be a good role model for my little sister and step brother.
Despite growing up in a house full of girls, I found love for the sport of football. I didn’t start playing football until I was in third grade when my mom signed me up. She said I needed to do something to keep myself busy and I’m glad she encouraged me to play. I grew up loving the sport from day one; I started by playing as the Lindsay Bulldogs as a running back. Right now I am currently varsity running back for our Lindsay High School football team and doing well. I was recently recognized for the hard work I have been putting in by being awarded player of the week this previous week. Basketball is another sport that I have come to love over time and one thing I have learned is that it is not an easy sport just like football; you have to be mentally and physically tough to play. In order to get better at those two sports you have to be willing to work hard which I believe relates to life because you have to work hard for what you want in life. For example last year I felt like I should’ve gotten more recognition which is why I put in extra time working during the offseason. As a result, in the third week of our season I got player of the week; it showed me that if you work hard you will get the recognition you deserve.
I always knew that I wasn’t the smartest kid in school but I knew in order to play sports I had to keep up with my grades. I’ve always done the minimum of work to remain eligible; if it wasn’t for sports I probably would have slipped through the cracks along time ago. I am thankful for playing sports because it has motivated me to stay on pace with my grades and my education. As I got older I realized I wanted to go to college regardless of sports and in order to go to college I need good grades. Now as a senior, college is my motivation to get good grades. I can be the first in my family to go to a four year university that would be significant in my family since no one else has done that yet.
As a senior I am highly determined to make it to college in order to make my family proud because I am sure they would want to see me succeed. I also want to do it for myself, for a better career, and because I am the type of person that is willing to do anything to achieve my goal. I have no doubt in my mind that if I work hard I can overcome any obstacle life throws at me.
